Abstract
In this paper, the author deals with Serbia’s position in relation to European division between the East and the West. At first, he does it in historical context, examining the position of Serbian lands in relation to centuries-long development of the East-West division. Later, he carries out a deeper analysis of the present-day Republic of Serbia in relation to four aspects of the contemporary state of this division: identity, security, economy, and democracy. The theoretical framework of the analysis is David Campbell’s performative theory. The analysis has two results. The first one is that the non-alignment either to the East, or the West, is deeply rooted in Serbian identity. The second is that the contemporary context of this division requires that Serbia remains attached to its own identity. Instead of a false dilemma whether to orient itself towards the East, or the West, Serbia has to proclaim the defense of its unique neutral position between the East and the West to be of its supreme national interest.
