Overall, China’s growth is an indispensable fact that will shape global affairs in the coming decades. Performing better than any other, Chinese economic power is transmitted globfally and supported by vast diplomatic and other means of soft power. Its global security policy, however, is not as assertive as an economic one since it lags behind all other instruments of power with a trajectory to promote benevolence of China’s military affairs within the international system. This study supplements the existing literature by proposing a detailed and systematic set of factors and variables that mediate between the concepts of Grand Strategy (GS) and the connectivity agenda in the Eurasian space covered by the Belt and Road Initiative. It aims to illuminate the issue of potential GS which is to be formulated at the beginning of the third decade of this century and implemented throughout the wider coming period. The authors argue that, due to the complex nature of the current international system, China is about to initiate its fifth GS, which inevitably involves connectivity policy as a surrogate for violent means of foreign policy. This paper’s research design reconciles classical enquiry of hegemonic stability and non-coercive achievement of China’s global presence. As it builds on the current academic debate about China’s hegemony modalities, the authors seek to identify and argue on factors that might contribute to the (re)definition of Beijing’s strategy to ignite this process – facilitating conditions and challenging variables. A risk analysis is then performed for each of the identified factors for the current conditions in the international system, as well as until the year 2035. This paper found that the intrinsic challenging variables (immanent to China) and the domestic facilitating conditions (internal political processes) are of critical importance for China’s next GS codification efforts.
