Abstract

This paper deals with the research question of how the emerging multipolar world order affects relations between NATO and the People’s Republic of China. The authors analyze the changing world order from unipolarity to multipolarity, the rise of China and Russia as global security actors, and internal relations among the NATO members. The tested general hypothesis within this research is as follows: The emerging multipolarity creates very complex circumstances for adopting the appropriate NATO strategy to address the rise of China. Taking the above mentioned into consideration and using a glimpse at international relations theory and the lessons of history, this paper seeks to find the roots of obstacles to defining an effective NATO strategy to address the rise of China as a global security actor in the contemporary world. The position of the Republic of Serbia as a neutral country in the coming multipolarity order is also examined in light of these findings.
