Abstract

After the breakup of Yugoslavia Serbia, like the other countries in the region, is working on the accession to a number of international, European and regional organizations. The most important remaining two are the European Union and the World Trade Organization (WTO). Serbia is the only country apart from Bosnia and Herzegovina, which has not yet acceded to the WTO and it is a disadvantage compared to other countries in the region. The problem of regulation of genetically modified organisms and the remaining bilateral negotiations currently pose the greatest obstacle to Serbia on its way to the full membership. This paper will attempt to determine the effects of absence and try to predict the future effects of Serbia’s accession to the WTO and its impact on the current position of Serbia in the region. On the way to improve economic relations with other countries the WTO accession for Serbia is a very important step.
