Abstract

On the road towards the EU membership each candidate country has to fulfill certain criteria. EU considers respect for human rights as one of preconditions for peace, stability and development. In that light, authors of this article give insight to the development of relations between Republic of Serbia and the European Union. Republic of Serbia, as one of the EU candidate countries, normatively speaking, has solid basis to provide efficient human rights protection. Serbian legislative is adjusted to the international standards and domestic laws and regulations contain international human rights obligations. Still, there are some obstacles for their implementation in practice. It seems that some policies and procedures aimed to protect or promote human rights should be introduced in order to ensure accountability. In that manner, special task is to strengthen institutions entitled to promote and protect human rights, guarantee oversight and ensure accountability.
