Abstract

With the rapid development of international trade, some of the old ideas related to the connection of the countries of Central and South-eastern Europe, whose important connection makes a course on the river basin of the Danube-Oder-Labe/Elbe River (DOL/DOE), have revived. The proposal to restart this project appeared immediately after the end of the Cold War and the independence of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The integration of these river systems and their integration with the Trans-European Transport Network of the European Union (TEN-T) involve the construction of over thirty integrated ports and industrial zones along Labe/Elbe, Vltava/Moldau, Oder/Odra, Morava and the Danube, which should lead to accelerated industrial development and economic growth of all countries within the Danube basin. In recent times, China was also interested in this project, which supported its implementation within the “One Belt, One Road” (OBOR) Initiative. The funds planned for the realization of this Chinese initiative could therefore be used for the realization of the goals of inter-regional cooperation in Europe, and above all for connecting the countries of Southeast Europe with the countries of Central Europe in a direction that would go through international river corridor along the rivers Oder, Elbe and Danube via Morava, Vardar/Axios to the Aegean Sea. At the same time, it would have achieved a Chinese plan to establish stronger economic and trade links at the trans-continental level, which is per se, and an important prerequisite for achieving the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations.
