Abstract

This chapter analyses the strategic goals and tools of Russian influence in Serbia. It is theoretically grounded in a neoclassical realist framework, aiming to analyse the various strategies and tactics used by Russia to exert influence in Serbia while considering the larger geopolitical dynamics at play. It delves into various facets of Russia’s influence in Serbia, including trade and energy relations, political and diplomatic leverage, military cooperation, cultural and religious influence, as well as propaganda and disinformation campaigns. The hypothesis postulates that Russia aims to preserve its sphere of influence and undermine NATO and the European Union in the Balkans. To investigate this hypothesis, the article also analyses the strategic motives guiding Russian behaviour and their effects on Serbia’s internal dynamics and foreign policy decision-making processes. This study provides insights into the complexities of this phenomenon and its implications for the Balkan region.
