Abstract

The main goal of this paper is to present, from a theoretical perspective, the advantages of the regional security complex in contemporary international relations from the perspective of small and micro states. While, on the other hand, on the empirical example of the so-called Western Balkans, to show how the regional security complex in the case of weak states can in itself represent a challenge, risk and threat. In this context, the research question of the paper is to what extent small and micro states can effectively contribute to contemporary security flows from the perspective of a regional security complex? The main research hypothesis is that the regional security complex represents a chance for small and micro states to effectively confront contemporary cross-border and hybrid security phenomena.
