Abstract

The successive crises that have affected the European Union accompanied by recent geopolitical circumstances, have influenced that the contested EU enlargement policy in the past decade, returned to the top of the EU’ agenda. This is evidenced by the EU’ urgent need to address the aspirations of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia for the EU membership, which in other circumstances would have been presented as unrealistic. Based on the initial impression that the Russian - Ukrainian war has, to some extent revived the integration process of the WB countries, the paper examines the real impact of the latest geopolitical factors on the EU's integration capacity. Within this framework, the author analyzes the perspective of the membership of the WB states, starting from the thesis that the debate over the potential enlargement of the EU no longer refers to the Western Balkans or Ukraine, but rather represents an existential issue with far-reaching implications for the EU and its ability to remain a prominent player in a changing global surrounding. The EU enlargement policy has the potential to become a credible EU policy once again, with certain modalities and necessary adjustments to geopolitical circumstances, as well as sufficiently flexible approach. Consequently, the prospect of further EU enlargement will depend primarily on the political will in candidate countries on the one side, and the use of the new geopolitical situation on the other.
