Abstract

This study examines Russia’s role in the Dniester conflict and its impact on Moldova’s security and foreign policy. It focuses on the role of one external actor and the implications of its policies in the context of Russia’s current strained relations with the West rather than on the conflict itself, its history, or possible solutions. In light of Russia’s invasion and recognition of Ukraine’s separatist republics, it’s essential to understand its near-abroad policy and historical, symbolic, and vital geopolitical interests in the region. Russia, a key regional player, has always been present during all stages of the conflict and has used its position to pursue a policy that has benefted separatists for years. This study notes that Moscow has considered the post-Soviet space a critical area for national security, seeking to maintain and expand its influence. Its role in unresolved regional conflicts is primarily to mitigate the impact of other geopolitical players. An approach to the Dniester Conflict based on maintaining Russia’s military presence and political influence in the region affects Moldova’s foreign and security policy. It would enable Russia to obstruct Moldova’s Euro-Atlantic integration while maintaining influence in the post-Soviet space.
