The main aim of this paper is to analyze the impact of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) on economic connectivity between China and Western Balkan countries (WB5). Economic connectivity will be examined and measured, according to a theoretical framework, using trade and investment data as the main indicators. In addition, indicators regarding migration, tourism, culture, and education will be used. The research will use a multilevel approach, whereby analysis will first look at economic connectivity within the WB5, and then at the 17+1 cooperation mechanism and the BRI, to assess the full scope of cooperation. Analysis will be based on data released by WB5 governments, as well as those available in the United Nations Commodity Trade Statistics (UN Comtrade) database. The author concludes that economic connectivity was improved primarily in the field of investment, whilst trade has the most potential for additional enhancement. Lastly, an improved joint regional approach by the WB countries would improve economic connectivity and so promote overall economic cooperation with China.
